Injecting Colour & Warmth into a North Facing Apartment

PROJECT BRIEF:

Aspirational show apartments, at Clifftown Shore in Southend, have been keeping me busy in recent months! In the latest project, the client requested a scheme with more colour and greater appeal to a younger target audience. Time was incredibly tight on this project, with just five weeks from being appointed to installation day.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT:

With a budget agreed with the client, I sourced all furniture, accessories, window dressings and artwork to dress this show apartment. Due to the tight schedule, I was limited to in stock items or those which guaranteed a very short lead time. Fortunately, every item ordered was delivered to site, where I worked with a carpenter to get the show apartment installed.

The bed is dressed in white bed linen with blue cushions at the back, terracotta geometric cushions in the middle and one black and white geometric cushion at the front.

INTERIOR DESIGN SOLUTIONS:

This one-bedroom apartment is north facing so required an injection of colour and warmth. The developer had previously painted all of the walls a light, neutral grey. I added a multi-toned rug in the living area, which set the foundations of my interior colour scheme. Building on this, I introduced a blue sofa, coloured accessories and soft furnishings to pull the scheme together.

The positioning of three mirrors above the sofa ensures that natural light from the patio doors is reflected to brighten the room. The mirrors also face the feature wall and project the signature wallpaper of an independent maker, which is displayed in a bespoke black frame. The design on the wallpaper is a nod to the coastal location, while the black frame links to a floating shelf in the kitchen and framed artwork throughout the apartment.

The bedroom had minimal architectural details, so it was crying out for a focal point. I selected a warm, rich terracotta for the headboard wall. I added full-length mirrors behind the bedside cabinets to optimise light and then installed artwork above the upholstered headboard as the final detail. A throw and selection of cushions add pops of colour and pattern, so the room now feels cosy and inviting.

Contemporary furniture was used throughout the apartment, with modern shapes and warm, dark woods fitting into my scheme for younger buyers. Abstract artwork was installed throughout and window dressings were kept to a minimum to avoid blocking out the natural daylight.

THE OUTCOME:

Within a few days of completing this show apartment, the estate agents were marketing the property on social media and through a launch event. It has revitalised viewings at the property and had positive feedback from all the prospective buyers. It was a challenge to design, source, purchase and installed this interior in such a short space of time, but it has provided a new lease of life for a final sales push.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL:

"Yet again it has been an absolute pleasure working with Alix.  Her design responds perfectly to the brief and has been installed without any problems.  We love the new show home and we have received very positive feedback from our customers.

We very much look forward to working with her again in the future."
